A detailed explanation of the metric system and its history is available from
our main metric page (Metric System
& Conversion). This page and the pages under it provides a shorter
and simpler view, with the needs of younger students in mind.
The 'metric system' is correctly known as the 'SI'. Although
most people still refer to it as the 'metric system', this is incorrect. Since
this group of pages is intended mainly for students, we will use the correct
term SI.
