Holidays in the Dordogne in Aquitaine South West France

The Dordogne has always been a popular holiday destination. Known as the Perigord, it is split into four areas. The white (blanc) named after the white chalky soil, Black (Noir) named after the black oaks that dominate the landscape, Green (vert) after the pine forest hill and purple (pourpre) after the wine grapes grown around the Bergerac area.  Holidays in the Dordogne are spent in what is considered by most to be the most beautiful department in France. Towns worth visiting are Perigueux with its stunning centre, Bergerac for its wines, medieval Sarlat, Riberac the capital of Foies Gras, Domme and Nontron where Richard the Lion heart met his end. In fact there are so many beautiful towns and villages in the Dordogne, it is impossible to mention or visit them all, nor do the Dordogne justice in just two weeks holiday. That is why so many holidaymakers return year after year to explore the Dordogne.  

Holidays in the Vendee Pays de la Loire North West France

The Vendee is wonderful for holidays that involve anything to do with the sea. Long sandy beaches that provide excellent surfing and sailing facilities. The offshore islands are delightful with charming white-washed cottages covered in Mimosas. Inland, the Poitevin marshes form a labyrinth of canals waterways creating a natural reserve for all forms of bird life. Nature lovers will all kind of fowl including waders, redshanks & marsh-owls. Checkout the Son et Lumiere in Puy de Fou - La Cinescenie of the Puy du Fou a spectacular with actors, horsemen and special lighting effects. Beach and deep sea fishing, night fishing and freshwater angling- on the beach, in canals, lakes & rivers can all be done in the Vendee.

Holidays in the Charente and Charente-Maritime Poitou-Charentes West France

The Charente is one of four départements making up the region of Poitou-Charentes in West France, the other most popular holiday destination being the Charente- Maritime. The Charente is divided into five areas, South Charente, bordering the Dordogne, the gentle sloping vineyards and of the wealthy cognac producing West Charente, the pretty riverside villages of the Ruffecois, the hillside pine forests of the Haute-Charente bordering the Limousin and the rock formations and caves in the Horte-et- Tardoire. Angouleme, the department capital is a superb destination for shoppers. The Charente-Maritime borders the Atlantic and has some of the finest sandy beaches in France. La Rochelle, Cognac, Saintes and Rochefort are all worth a visit. This area boasts the second highest level of sunshine in France.

Holidays in Morbihan in Brittany North West France  

Morbihan lies at the south of the four départements that make up the region of Brittany. Bordered by Finistère to the west, Côtes-d’Armor to the north and the Ille-et-Vilaine to the east. History is everywhere in Brittany and never far away, from the Atlantic Wall fortifications and the submarine pens at Lorient of the Second World War, the Hundred Years’ War fortresses at Josselin and Pontivy to the prehistoric standing stones at Carnac. Holidays in the Morbihan can be spent on the long sandy beaches or exploring the darker more mysterious interior. Seafood abounds and Brittany is renowned for its seafood cuisine. 

Holidays in Calvados Normandy North France  

Calvados is a department on the English channel in lower Normandy. Holidays must include a cider tasting trip. East of Caen, the Cider (Calvados) Route is a well signed tourist circuit that weaves its way through typical Calvados countryside through villages such as Beuvron en Auge, Bonnebosq and Beaufour Druval. The rolling landscape, elegant châteaux, manors, half-timbered houses and apple orchards, all help to create the picture postcard scenery. Holidays in Calvados often incorporate a visit to the Normandy landing beaches on the coast as well as visits to those beaches in the department of the Manche.

Holidays in Provence South of France  

Provence was the favourite holiday destination for Queen Victoria who helped turn Provence into a must visit holiday destination for wealthy Englishmen and their families. Provence has never lost its appeal to those who want to holiday and rub shoulders with the rich and famous. From Marseille, the location for the filming of the French Connection to thriving Nice with its frenetic nightlife, to Cannes with its chic promenade and St Tropez, made famous by Brigitte Bardot, the French Riviera has attracted a strong following. But move inland and you will discover the real Provence, a land of lavender fields, pretty white washed villages and olive groves, a region still much undiscovered by holidaymakers.      

Holidays in the French Alps South East

Think of skiing holidays in France and you immediately think of the French Alps and skiing in Courcheval, les Trois Vallees and Meribel. However, the Alps and in particular the region of the Rhone-Alpes is a fantastic all year round holiday destination. The flowers in Spring are a sight to behold and the Alps in Summer are just stunning. The Rhone-Alpes consists of the French Alps and their foothills, and the long valleys of the Rhône and Saône rivers. The Départements are Loire, Rhône, Ain, Ardèche, Drôme, Isère, Savoie and Haute-Savoie.

Holidays in Languedoc-Roussillon South of France – Aude and Herault

The Languedoc-Roussillon is a holiday destination that has grown in popularity over the last two decades and includes five Départements, the Aude, Gard, Hérault, Lozère and Pyrénées-Oriental. The Aude and Hérault are the most popular holiday destinations amongst holidayakers. The region has been a French province since the 13th century. The Mediterranean coast from Perpignan in the west and Montpellier in the east has some of the most modern holiday resorts in Europe, including the resorts of Port Leucate, Port Bacarès and La Grande Motte. More wine is produced in Languedoc-Roussillon than any other region in France. Most of the major vineyards, were established during the Roman. Make sure you visit Narbonne, Carcassonne and Beziers whilst on holiday here.

Holidays in Gascony South West France Gers, Lot-et Garonne Hautes Pyrenees 

Gascony is an area that encompasses parts of Aquitaine and the Midi-Pyrenees. D’Artagnan country, rugged, dramatic and undiminished by time. Holidays in Gascony will make you expect to see the four musketeers gallop through one of the many Bastide villages that dot the countryside.  Parts of the Gers, Lot-et Garonne Hautes Pyrenees are all located in Gascony, a land without official borders. The ancient duchy of Gascony ceased to exist after the French revolution. Locals, still call themselves Gascons and speak the local dialect. Tourism has failed to make its mark on this region of France and it is well worth exploring.

Holidays in the Loire Valley (Centre) Central France 

Holidays in the Loire valley offer the widest choice of departments in France. Chateaux dominate the skyline from the river and look down on tourists with elegant disdain. Wine tasting tours are easy to arrange. Get in your car, drive a few kilometres, stop off and taste the wine. Repeat the process as many times as you wish. It is that simple. Stretching from the department of the Loiret to the Vendee on the coast, the Loire River valley is home to thousands of holiday homes. Angers, Saumur, Tours, Blois and Orleans are all towns worth visiting.
